5 Fun Fall Activities in Kansas City for You and Your Grandchildren

Fall in Kansas City typically means that it might be 85 and sunny one day and barely over freezing the next. Just like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get. Hot or cold or rain or shine, there are still several fun fall activities to enjoy in Kansas City.

Here are five of them that we thought you might be able to enjoy with your grandchildren. We’ve included a few options that could be great last-minute, pre-Halloween plans and other fun fall activities that could carry over into the winter.

1. Pumpkin Hollow at Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead

Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead has long been a perfect place for a family outing, especially on a picture-perfect fall day. The farmstead has a very festive look during October thanks to Pumpkin Hollow. Pumpkin Hollow adventures include a horse-drawn hayride, climbing a hay pyramid, sliding down a gigantic hay slide, a spider web maze, lawn games, and of course, pumpkin picking.

Pumpkin Hollow will run from October 1-31. It’s open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday-Sunday. Tickets can only be purchased at the Farmstead. Tickets for Pumpkin Hollow are $10 (plus regular Farmstead admission). For Friends of the Farmstead members, Farmstead admission is free and Pumpkin Hollow tickets are $9.

2. The Great Pumpkin Fest at Worlds of Fun

Speaking of marquee locations in Kansas City, what better place for a fun fall activity than Worlds of Fun? On Saturdays and Sundays from September 17-October 30, Worlds of Fun will be hosting the Great Pumpkin Fest.

Great Pumpkin Fest has quite the range of fun fall activities to partake in. The kiddos can check out some cool play zones and costume contests, and even be in dance parties with some of their favorite PEANUTS™ characters. There will also be a wide variety of family-friendly games, live entertainment, and plenty of tasty treats.

3. Enchanted Forest

The third fun fall activity on our list certainly won’t be lacking from an entertainment aspect either. Enchanted Forest will be hosted once again from 4-8 p.m. on October 27 at Sar-Ko-Par Trails Park in Lenexa.

Puppets, musicians, and singers will help make for a great atmosphere for all to enjoy. They will be performing along the trail around Rose’s Pond. As you’re making your way around the pond, there will be plenty of opportunities for fun photos between the photo booth and seasonal displays.

You and your grandchildren are more than welcome to wear Halloween costumes, but it’s totally optional. This event isn’t technically at trick-or-treating event, but some of the generous sponsors could be handing out candy. If you can’t make it to Enchanted Forest, there are a number of other fun fall activities in Lenexa that will get you in the spirit of Halloween.

4. GloWild

Boo at the Zoo is always a hit if you’re still looking for last-minute Halloween weekend ideas, but there’s another fun fall activity at the Kansas City Zoo that we want to highlight. The KC Zoo is hosting GloWild from September 1 through December 11.

The GloWild experience tends to take about 90 minutes as you make your way along the riveting one-mile route. GloWild is an amazing lantern festival that includes huge handmade steel and silk works of art depicting animals, KC landmarks, botanicals, and Asian cultural creations.

There will be live Chinese acrobatic performances at Helzberg Penguin Plaza at 6:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 8:30 p.m. about halfway through the route. There are several ticket options for GloWild, including general admission, family four-packs, zoo/GloWild combo, group tickets of 15 or more, and an unlimited pass.

5. Pickleball

After starting our list of fun fall activities with some pumpkin-themed events, we’re ending it with an activity that’s rapidly growing in popularity. We’re talking about pickleball. One of the great things about pickleball in the Kansas City area is that there are places to play outdoors and indoors.

Of course, there are Chicken N Pickle locations in North Kansas City and Overland Park that have indoor and courts available for rent. But there are also outdoor courts around the city where you can play for free. There are also some community centers in the KC area with indoor pickleball courts, so you could be in luck to play year-round there as well.

No matter your skill level, pickleball provides a perfect opportunity for you and your grandchildren to get some exercise and spend quality time together in the process. If you’ve never played before, now could be a great time to start. It could end up being one of your favorite fun all activities for years to come.
