CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™
Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, LLC (CFP Board) owns the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and CFP® (with plaque design) in the United States, which it authorizes use of by individuals who successfully complete CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements.
Certified Public Accountant
The Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Designation is issued by the Boards of Accountancy. Like regular accountants, CPAs can help organizations and individuals record and organize financial information, analyze trends, make budgetary recommendations, prepare tax documents, perform internal audits, and ensure all financial activities are compliant with local and federal regulations. However, due to their training in the public sector, CPAs can do a few other things that regular accountants legally can’t, such as represent clients during IRS audits, perform external public audits, and prepare audited financial statements for the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). Each state has slightly different requirements that one must follow for CPA certification. Personal Financial Specialist
The Personal Financial Specialist (PFS) credential is issued by The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA®) which is granted to Certified Public Accountants. Candidates for consideration must be AICPA® members, hold an unrevoked CPA certificate, have relevant personal financial planning experience, complete specified education hours, pass a certification exam, and fulfill continuing education requirements.
Accredited Investment Fiduciary
The Accredited Investment Fiduciary (AIF®) credential is issued by the offered and recognized by the Center for Fiduciary Studies. To obtain this designation, a candidate must meet a point-based threshold based on a combination of education, relevant industry experience, or professional development. In addition, a candidate must complete either a web-based or a capstone program, complete a proctored closed book final certification exam, and complete at least 6 hours of continuing education requirements per year.
Registered Financial Consultant
The Registered Financial Consultant (RFC®) designation is awarded by the International Association of Registered Financial Consultants (IARFC) to financial advisors who meet high standards of education, experience, and integrity. Prerequisites include obtaining a professional designation such as AAMS®, CFA, CFP®, ChFC®, CLU®, CPA, EA, LUTCF®, CFEI®, or AFC®, a life insurance license, or a bachelor’s or advanced degree in Business, Finance, Economics, or a related field. Candidates must complete at least 40 hours of continuing professional education every two years.
Chartered Life Underwriter
The Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU) is a professional designation for individuals who wish to specialize in life insurance and estate planning. Individuals must complete five core courses and three elective courses, and successfully pass all eight two-hour, 100-question examinations in order to receive the designation.
Chartered Financial Consultant
The Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC®) is awarded by the American College of Financial Services. Prerequisites for consideration include three full years of full-time business experience within five years preceding the awarding of the designation. Designation training consist of eight online, self-study courses with eight closed-book proctored final exams. 30 hours of continuing education must be completed every two years, including one hour of ethics CE.
