J. Hunter Orr, CFA
Managing Director
Department: Advisors
Education: Bachelor of Arts in economics; Master of Finance
Hunter joined the team in May 2026 when Flaharty Asset Management became Modern Wealth Management. With the support of an experienced team, Hunter enjoys doing his part to deliver an investment management experience tailored to what each client values most. For some clients, that means greater clarity and organization around their financial decisions. For others, it means pursuing their financial goals with the support of an experienced team that helps coordinate and oversee key aspects of their financial plan.
Prior to joining Modern Wealth Management, Hunter built his career helping high-net-worth individuals and families navigate complex financial decisions with clarity and confidence. In his role as Chief Investment Officer with Flaharty Asset Management, he focused on investment strategy, portfolio construction, due diligence, and helping clients stay disciplined through changing market environments. His career has been shaped by a commitment to deeply personal relationships, thoughtful planning, and delivering advice that supports families across generations.
Hunter’s family is the most important thing in his life. His “FAM” doesn’t just include the three little ones he’s blessed to tuck in every night either. It extends to all those he confidently feels blessed to have in his life.
Hunter enjoys studying investor psychology and learning about how people make decisions under uncertainty, especially when money, fear, and optimism are involved. He believes investing is not something you truly learn from a textbook and that markets are shaped by human emotion as much as by math. Hunter has always found that fascinating, which may be a polite way of saying he spends more free time thinking about investor behavior than most people would consider normal.
Hunter considers himself to be a collector of knowledge and experiences. The knowledge and experiences he’s accrued includes but isn’t limited to investment education-based (earning the four-year Chartered Financial Analyst® designation charter, teaching as a professor of finance, and publishing research), testing the limits of the human body (seven marathons, an Ironman world championship bid, one lifetime hole-in-one), and being slightly quirky to entertain the kids (circus juggling and authoring children’s books).
