It’s déjà vu. Once again, there are warrants out for my arrest, although this year, I’ve gone coastal as the IRS supposed warrants out in the state of Florida AND Kansas. Impressed?
Now, before anyone calls Dean Barber (CEO of Modern Wealth Management) or heaven forbid, my mother in a state of panic, please know that this is a common scam-it’s not the IRS, there are no warrants out for my arrest in any state, and my husband and I do not owe any back taxes.
According to JoAnn Huber, CPA, CFP of Modern Wealth Management, the IRS will never call you demanding money over the phone, nor will they threaten to arrest you after alerting state authorities. These kind of phone scams seem to occur more often during tax season, although they do happen year-around.
Why do these type of fake phone calls happen? Simply put, because they work. According to the IRS.gov website, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) have received reports of roughly 896,000 contacts since October 2013 and have become aware of over 5,000 victims who have collectively paid over $26.5 million as a result of the scam.*
As far as getting these annual fakery phone calls, unfortunately I’m not unique. Other Modern Wealth Management Employees have gotten the same type of phone calls on their personal phones and when I posted this scam on my Facebook page, I heard from others that they had received similar phone calls/voicemails.
If you receive one of these phone calls, do NOT engage in conversation with them, do not call them back, and most importantly, do not give them any financial information. To read up on this phone scam, click here for more information from the IRS’s website.
