Bring in Spring with These 5 Fun Activities for Retirees

Following the snowstorm that just hit the Kansas City area, it’s hard not to get excited about the possibility of some nice spring weather being right around the corner. Last fall, I brainstormed some ideas of some fun fall activities for retirees to do with their grandchildren. So, let’s do the same thing with looking into some fun activities for retirees for this spring.

1. Take Yourself Out to the Ballgame

If you’re a big baseball fan like myself, you might be asking if there will be any baseball to watch this spring at Kauffman Stadium due to the ongoing MLB lockout. I’m hopeful that there will be, but if not, there will still be professional baseball to watch in Kansas City outside of the Royals.

In their first season since rebranding, the Kansas City Monarchs (formerly known as the Kansas City T-Bones) were 2021 American Association champions. The Monarchs will play their home opener on May 13 against the Sioux City Explorers. Single game tickets aren’t available yet, but there are six-game and 12-game mini plans available now as well as half season and full season tickets.

If the MLB lockout does end soon and the MLB season starts on time, the Royals home opener is slated for April 4 against the Chicago White Sox. Even with the ongoing lockout, the Royals recently made a winning move that you can benefit from. While I listed visiting the Negro League Baseball Museum as fun activity for retirees in last fall’s article, I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention it again, as Royals Charities is covering cost of admission for everyone in February to celebrate Black History Month.

2. Navigating the Nelson

Speaking of well-known Kansas City museums, springtime is a great opportunity to check out the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art. Rain or shine, there’s always something fun to do at the Nelson. Obviously, there is never a shortage of fascinating art to check out inside the museum. The two newest exhibits, “Lively Creatures: Animals in Chinese Art” and “Life of Christ and Saints,” just debuted in December.

Remember, though, that there’s plenty to explore outside at the Nelson as well. While an official opening date is still pending, the Nelson’s mini golf art course is a fun spring activity for retirees and people of all ages. The course was open from March 19 to October 24 in 2021 and cost $16 for non-members and $12 for members. Whether you’re playing a round of mini golf, observing the museum’s many exhibits, or both, there’s nothing quite like a picnic on the Nelson’s lawn to go along with your visit.

If you’ve been thinking about becoming a member at the Nelson, now might be a good time to do it. Member Appreciation Weekend is set for March 4-6. The Nelson’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday.

3. Ernie Miller Park and Nature Center

As spring blooms, retirees and their friends and families aren’t the only ones who might be breaking out of winter hibernation. Springtime is the prime time to visit Ernie Miller Park and Nature Center if you want to encounter many forms of wildlife.

There is a wide variety of special spring events on the Ernie Miller calendar. Some of them have limited availability and require advanced registration, so check them out sooner rather than later. Those include family night hikes on March 25 and April 1, a whole week of spring kickoff programs from March 14-18, and an easter egg hunt on April 16.

While those special events are sure to be fun activities for retirees and their loved ones, I want to take a second to remember some advice from late Luther Vandross. The best things in life are free. General admission to Ernie Miller Park and Nature Center is among those best things.

4. The Lenexa Art Fair

In addition to the Nelson’s amazing artwork, springtime in Kansas City features an abundance of art fairs. One of them will be taking place just a few miles away from our Lenexa office, when the Lenexa Civic Center hosts the Lenexa Art Fair on May 7.

From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., you’ll have the opportunity to soak in the arts with your eyes and ears. The Lenexa Art Fair will feature works from artists all over the Midwest and have live music playing throughout the day. The Lenexa Farmers Market will also be held there in the morning.

If your grandchildren enjoy the arts, this will be a wonderful event for them as well. The Lenexa Arts Council will have an art tent for children to create their own art projects. There will be plenty of sidewalk chalk around for them to enjoy as well.

5. St. Patrick’s Day Parades

As we wrap up our list of five fun activities for retirees to do this spring in Kansas City, we have a quick question for you. Who doesn’t love a good parade? Whether you’re Irish and want to celebrate your heritage or just want to have an all-around fun day with your family, Kansas City has plenty of St. Patrick’s Day parades scheduled for you to enjoy.

The Kansas City St. Patrick’s Day Parade will be held on St. Patrick’s Day (March 17). It will start at 11 a.m. on Linwood and Broadway streets before heading south along Broadway to 43rd Street. This year’s theme is “Doing an Irish Dance.”

Downtown Overland Park will host an inaugural St. Patrick’s Day parade, which will begin at 10 a.m. on March 12. Martin City’s St. Patrick’s Day parade will be held from 2-3 p.m. on March 13. There will also be St. Patrick’s Day parades in Brookside at 2 p.m. on March 12 and Shawnee at 1 p.m. on March 13. Just wear some green, and you’ll fit right in at whatever parade you attend.
